Have You Heard of a Beard Transplant?

For many men, a big, bushy beard is a sign of pride: a symbol of masculinity. But not all men are able to grow full beards naturally; some require a little extra help where genetics may not suffice. If you’ve struggled to grow a beard because of thin, patchy facial hair, have had skin cancer, skin grafts, hormonal conditions, facial injuries, or are unable to cover as much of your face as you’d like, you may want to consider a beard transplant. A specialist at Eternal Hair and Esthetics in Totowa, New Jersey can evaluate you to help determine whether this solution is right for you.

How beard transplants work

Our team has much experience with a transplanting technique known as direct follicle implant (DFI). This new technique extracts the hair follicles that are healthy and resistant to hair loss from hairier spots on your head (usually at the back). The individual follicles are then implanted in the region where you want to see more facial hair.

We at Eternal Hair and Esthetics have a unique “extractor” tool to retain as many healthy “donor follicles” as possible without involving any incisions or invasive procedures. Our implanting tool places each follicle exactly where you want it.

The beard restoration process

When you schedule a consultation, a specialist will conduct an evaluation of your face and the hair at the back of your head to see if there is donor potential. We will then discuss your goals for the procedure and design a treatment plan to meet those goals, including factors such as hair symmetry and density. We only use as many donor follicles as you would like, depending on the type of beard you like.

Typically, a mustache involves 600-1,000 follicles; a full goatee uses 1,200-1,500 follicles; sideburns use 400-600 on each side, and cheeks use 1,000-1,500 on each side.

Once the donor follicles have been extracted, you will take a short break, and then undergo local anesthesia. At that point, the specialist will carefully place the hair follicles into the desired area of your face. Once the procedure is finished, you will receive at-home care instructions to ensure the health and longevity of your implants. They will grow normally for the rest of your life, looking just like natural facial hair.
